I am using a Silent Pro Gold 1200W to power my (3) MSI R9 280x GPU rig. I originally had 2 cards, and that PSU was probably overkill, but I knew I wanted to expand moving forward so it made sense. I just added my 3rd card last week. All the research I did on various rig specs online all said that for long term it is best to opt for the "gold" rated PSUs and that trying to save money on power supply can really screw things up for you later.
I currently have a machine in my living room with 2 Gigabyte R9 270Xs that are powered via a Corsair HTX 850, no problems. My machine currently draws ~380watts which I am going to tinker with this weekend and try to reduce without dropping my hash rate too much hopefully. Then I will add a third card in a couple weeks once I can get to the casino :-D
The R9 280x takes two power plugs, a 8-pin and a 6-pin. However most power supplies only have 1 8pin output for the CPUto run 2 R9280x's I'd need a PSU with at least 3 8-pin out puts. I'm having trouble finding one. What do people use for this?
^Ditto what ceede said. I'm 97.327% certain a cpu 8 pin won't even fit. I remember looking at the pin configuration and realizing this. Every psu I've bought in the last few years has 6+2 pcie connections meaning that if the psu advertises 4 pcie connections that each of those has 6 pins with 2 optional pins.
